Oral Exam

Oral Exam / X Ray

An oral exam, often accompanied by X-rays, is a standard procedure in dental care to assess oral health, diagnose dental issues, and plan treatments. Here’s an overview of these procedures:

Oral Exam:
Patient History:
The dentist reviews your medical history, including any current medications, allergies, or conditions that may affect dental treatment.
Meanwhile You may discuss any symptoms or concerns you have regarding your oral health.
Visual Examination:
The dentist inspects your teeth for signs of decay, cavities, wear, or damage.
The health of your gums is assessed for signs of gingivitis (gum inflammation) or periodontitis (gum disease).
The tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat are examined for signs of oral cancer, lesions, or abnormalities.
Periodontal Evaluation:
The dentist uses a periodontal probe to measure the depth of spaces (pockets) between your teeth and gums. Deeper pockets may indicate gum disease.
Occlusion (Bite) Assessment:
The dentist checks how your upper and lower teeth come together (occlusion) to identify any bite problems or abnormalities.
Oral Hygiene Instructions:
Based on the exam findings, the dentist may provide instructions on improving oral hygiene practices, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques.

X-ray Procedures (Radiographs):
Types of X-rays:
Bitewing X-rays: These show the upper and lower back teeth and are used to detect decay between teeth and changes in bone density caused by gum disease.
Periapical X-rays: Show entire tooth from crown to beyond the root tips. Used to detect abscesses, cysts, or changes in the bone structure.
Purpose:
X-rays help dentists detect cavities, bone loss, infections, tumors, and other dental conditions not visible during a clinical exam.
They aid in planning treatments such as fillings, root canals, extractions, and orthodontic procedures.
X-rays are used to monitor the progression of dental conditions over time.

Safety Precautions:
Lead aprons and thyroid collars are used to shield the body from radiation exposure.
X-rays are typically taken periodically based on your oral health needs and risk factors.

Considerations:
If you have dental anxiety or concerns about X-rays, discuss them with the dentist. They can explain the procedure and address your concerns.
